I highly recommend using this avocado banana hair mask while avocados are in season, thus when it’s cheaper to make. You can also prepare a few batches and freeze them!

But let’s have a closer look at those two amazing hair benefiting ingredients: avocado and banana!

    Ingredients

    • avocado
    • banana
    • oil (optional)
    • essential oil, like lavender (optional)

Choosing ingredients: you definitely want to choose a ripe avocado and banana that are soft enough to be mashed but not too mushy and past their prime time.

Because, the younger the fruit, the more nutrients it contains! And those special nutrients are what we are after!

Benefits of Avocado for your Hair

    • smooth and shiny hair
    • hydrates (locks in moisture)
    • revitalises dry, dull hair
    • protects against damage
    • promotes hair growth
    • prevents hair loss (strengthens the hair follicles)
    • soothes inflamed scalp (promotes a healthy scalp)

Avocado is loaded with essential vitamins (vitamins C and E), minerals (potassium and magnesium) and amino acids. Nutrients that your hair needs to thrive!

Avocado has a lot of natural oils that moisturise and deep-conditions dry, coarse hair as well as prevent inflammation while restoring the natural balance of the skin and your hair roots.

The mineral potassium regulates the fluid balance of the cells in the blood thus it helps prevent hair loss. Better blood flow (circulation) means better absorption of nutrients which means our hair gets much stronger and won’t fall out as easily!

Another great benefit of avocado is that it also encourages hair to grow faster—especially when massaged into the scalp where it unclogs the hair follicles. You also increase the blood flow which means the natural oils get absorbed quicker.

Vitamins C and E are natural antioxidants that will help protect your hair from harmful free radicals.

Benefits of Banana for your Hair

    • stronger thicker hair
    • relieves dandruff symptoms
    • moisturises
    • smoothes hair (anti-frizz)
    • protects against breakage
    • repairs sun-damaged hair

Similar to avocados, bananas are rich in minerals (such as potassium and silica), vitamins and natural oils. They may not boost hair growth like avos but bananas will help you maintain healthy hair (and not lose it to breakage)!

The mineral silica in bananas may help synthesise collagen that may make your hair stronger and thicker and may improve your hair’s elasticity so it doesn’t break off easily.

Bananas are highly hydrating which not only benefits your locks but also your scalp. Especially, when you suffer from a dry, flaky and itchy scalp and dandruff.

    Oil & Essential Oil

You absolutely don’t have to add oil because avocado and bananas are already rich in oils, but if you like to hydrate your hair even further, you can add 1 tablespoon of coconut oil or argan oil!

If you wish to add an essential oil such as lavender (soothing/hair growth), rosemary (hair growth) or chamomile (soothing), you need to dilute it with a carrier oil (I recommend 2 teaspoons, if not using any other oil).

Unless you’re using lavender oil only! Lavender is a gentle oil that doesn’t need to be diluted (unless you’re very sensitive).

I love adding just a drop of lavender oil to this avocado banana hair mask!

    Instructions

How to make this Avocado Banana Hair Mask

Put the avocado and banana into a bowl and mash with a fork, or ideally, blend it with a stick blender for a smoother result. Mix in oils, if you like.

I actually recommend blending your hair mask, if you can. Unless you can mash the ingredients so well that no small chunks are left.

It’s just because these little chunks like to get tangled up in your hair and are very hard to wash out. So, just a tip—from my own experience!

How to use this Avocado Banana Hair Mask

    1. Start with the hair roots. Spread the avocado banana hair mask, part for part, over your whole head.
    2. Then, move down from the hair shafts to the ends.
    3. Gently massage your scalp with your fingertips and go down all the way to the ends of your hair.
    4. Leave your hair mask in for about 30 minutes. Wash your hair with a mild shampoo.

My Tip: To prevent my hair to dry out during those 30 minutes, I just spray it with water to keep it damp.

How often to use this Avocado Banana Hair Mask

You can use this avocado banana mask once a week if you wish. Because avocados aren’t the cheapest fruit on the market, I only apply the mask once a month as a little booster treatment.

For faster hair growth, apply this mask every time (or every second time) you wash your hair.

To relieve an inflamed, itchy scalp, use this mask as often as needed.

    Storage

This avocado banana hair mask keeps in the fridge for about 1 week. You can also freeze it (I recommend in batches) for up to 3 months!!

Don’t worry, this hair mask will change colour after a few days in the fridge, turning into an unappetising brown. But that’s normal and doesn’t mean it went bad. You’ll smell it when it did!

    Safety & warnings

Allergic reactions to bananas are possible and may even become life-threatening. Use caution when allergic to any other fruit or vegetable in the latex family (that includes avocados as well!).

Generally, allergic reactions to avocados (for topical use) are rare but do exist.

If unsure, make a patch test before using this hair mask. Choose a small part of your skin and apply this mask. Leave it on for about 20-30 minutes and check for reactions.

    My Top Tip

If you have some leftovers, use them on your face!! This hair mask is also a great hydrating & rejuvenating face mask (read more about it here)!
